Discover Croatia’s best kept secret- Plitvice National Park

Croatia is best known for its beautiful coastal cities like that of Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik as well as its many islands. Almost everyone I meet who has been to Croatia has done an island sail cruise or visited these coastal towns and soaked up the sun on the stunning beaches.

Well, I’m here to let you know about one of Croatia’s best kept secrets, one which requires a drive inland through the mountains. A few hours inland from the coastal city of Zadar, Plitvice National Park can be found. The area is thick with lush green forest and undulating hills which hide one of the best natural landscapes I have come across.

The Plitvice Lakes are a series of lakes linked together by small waterfalls and offer some of the clearest waters around. Walking down steep cliff trails into the lakes area provides great views of the area and the aqua waters below. Once in the valley, small footbridges and walkways run alongside the many lakes and lead through the lush forest canopy. With the waters being so clear everything can be seen from the debris at the bottom of the lakes to the many fish swimming near the surface.

I remember seeing a photo of this place and researching tirelessly to find out where it was. When I discovered it was Croatia, it was quickly pencilled into our itinerary. Even at the cost of bypassing some other places, it was well worth the visit. There is not much more that can be said about this place and as they say a picture says a thousand words. So with that I will let the photos speak for themselves.

  1. I am truly mesmerized by all the greens and the waters. It is sooo stunningly beautiful and kinda wish I live nearby.

    • Me too Parvis, if I lived close i would visit every weekend. Truly an amazing place πŸ™‚

  2. Beautiful shots! The waterfalls are spectacular, especially the last image of your post.

  3. I absolutely agree that this National Park is Croatia’s best kept secrets. I’ve heard of many places in Croatia, but never of this. The photos are very beautiful indeed. How many days would you recommend us to stay there? Do you need to buy a ticker to get into the park? and how much does it cost? I must go there soon!

P.S. Waiting for you book πŸ™‚

    • Hi Agness, You ideally would want to spend at least 2 full days here. Jen and I did a day and a half and went in June. The tickets were 180 Kuna ($30 AUD) for a 2 day pass. Make sure you go in the summer months and you will get to see it at its best.
The book is in the final stages now, I think about 6 weeks away. I may post the first chapter as a teaser soon. πŸ™‚

      • Oh, I see. Thanks for the info :). Can’t wait to the first chapter!!

        • No probs. In that case I better post it soon!

    • Thanks Ioanna, it wasn’t hard to photograph, it is such an amazing place πŸ™‚

  4. Absolutely stunning! Wow!

β™₯ the colors so rich & vibrant. I’d stare at the falls for hours but the trails call too.

    Great work πŸ˜‰

    • Thanks Kay! They are amazing and had great trails

    • We drove a hire car from the coastal town of Zadar which is north of Split. I think there will be buses available from there. There is also accommodation near the park which I recommend as you would want a few days there.
